Russia's sanatorium and resort industry is undergoing major changes driven by new market trends. More and more young people and families are choosing preventive health treatments, which is shifting the focus from traditional medical institutions to modern wellness centers. The main changes include shorter average stays, but at the same time, there is a rise in short-term wellness trips and an increase in premium-class projects with more spacious accommodations.
Although traditional resort areas remain the leaders, new promising clusters are emerging. Currently, the sanatorium sector is in a phase of rapid growth, driven by three main factors: post-COVID demand for rehabilitation, changes in the domestic market, and the international political situation. Sanatoriums are becoming attractive for investment and an important part of domestic tourism. While they make up only a small share of all collective accommodation facilities, their significant portion of the total room supply highlights the large scale of these complexes.
long with the growth in domestic demand, there is also an influx of foreign tourists coming to Russia for medical treatment. Foreign visitors are particularly interested in the sanatoriums of Crimea, the Krasnodar Territory, and the Caucasian Mineral Waters region.
- Krasnodar Territory — 176 facilities
- Stavropol Territory — 115 facilities
- Republic of Crimea — 103 facilities
- Moscow Region — 86 facilities
- Republic of Bashkortostan — 56 facilities
The key factors determining where these facilities are located are: natural healing resources, sufficient demand from paying customers, and available infrastructure.
It's no surprise that the Stavropol Territory — one of the top three regions in Russia for the number of wellness facilities and possessing all the key factors for their successful development — is actively promoting itself at major industry events. The region plans to take part in the upcoming OTDYKH Leisure 2026 forum, which will be held on September 2–4 in Moscow (Timiryazev Center), where it will showcase the resort potential of the Caucasian Mineral Waters region.
Following the Russian regions, resorts from neighboring countries also plan to present their wellness offerings at the exhibition. The Republic of Belarus is of particular interest. Its health and medical centers have traditionally enjoyed steady demand from Russian tourists thanks to affordable prices, high-quality medical care, no language barrier, and convenient logistics.
One such participant that has already confirmed its presence at the OTDYKH Leisure 2026 exhibition is the Belarusian sanatorium "Sosny" (Pines). This health resort will present its wellness and rehabilitation programs to Russian tour operators and travel agencies, designed for guests from around the world. Visitors to the booth will be able to learn about the accommodation options, medical facilities, and discuss opportunities for collaboration for the upcoming season.
